Essential Oil Safety Basics
Essential oils are very concentrated plant extracts. They smell lovely, but they need care.
Safety basics
- Do not swallow essential oils.
- Dilute them before using on skin, and test a small area first.
- Keep them away from eyes.
- Store them away from children.
- Keep rooms aired when diffusing.
Children, pregnancy and pets
Ask a health professional before using oils around babies or during pregnancy. Some oils can harm pets, especially cats, so ask your vet.
Be careful with claims
The phrase “therapeutic grade” is a marketing term, not an official Canadian standard. Look for the plant’s Latin name, the country of origin and clear labelling.
