How to Grow Herbs Indoors in Canada
You do not need a garden to have fresh herbs all winter. A bright window or a small grow light is enough to get started.
Best herbs for indoors
- Chives: easy and forgiving
- Mint: grows fast, so keep it in its own pot
- Parsley: copes with lower light
- Thyme and oregano: like to dry out between waterings
- Basil: needs the most warmth and light
Light
Winter days are short in Canada. A south-facing window helps, but most herbs do better with a simple LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day.
Water and pots
Use pots with drainage holes. Water when the top of the soil feels dry. Overwatering is the most common way to lose indoor herbs.
Harvesting
Snip often, and take no more than a third of the plant at a time. Regular cutting keeps herbs bushy.
