Starting a Herb Garden in Containers
A balcony or small patio is enough for a productive herb garden.
Choosing pots
Pick containers with drainage holes. Most herbs do well in a pot about 20 cm wide. Larger pots dry out less quickly.
Soil and sun
Use potting mix, not garden soil. Most herbs need at least six hours of sun, while parsley and mint cope with some shade.
Good partners
- Rosemary, thyme and sage like drier soil.
- Basil and parsley like more water.
- Keep mint on its own.
Summer care
Pots dry fast in hot weather, so check them daily. Pinch off flowers on basil to keep the leaves coming.
