How to Start Herb Seeds Indoors
Starting from seed costs little and gives you more plants. In most of Canada, indoor sowing gives herbs a head start on a short growing season.
When to start
Look up the average last frost date for your area, then read the seed packet. Many herbs are started six to eight weeks before that date.
What you need
- Clean trays or small pots
- Seed-starting mix
- A bright window or grow light
- A spray bottle
Steps
- Fill pots and moisten the mix.
- Sow seeds at the depth on the packet. Very small seeds need only a light covering.
- Keep the mix damp, not soggy, and warm.
- Give seedlings plenty of light once they sprout.
- Thin crowded seedlings.
Moving outside
After frost has passed, harden plants off by giving them a little more time outdoors each day for about a week.
